Abstract
Actinomycosis is a rare chronic suppurative infection with the characteristics of
external sinus tract formation and sulfur granule containing inflammatory discharge from
the lesion. Actinomycosis may involve the lung. pleura, mediastinum and chest wall
irrespectively of the anatomic boundaries of thorax structures. Because the clinical
presentation of pulmonary actinomycosis resembles pulmonary tuberculosis or lung
cancer, the diagnosis of pulmonary actinomycosis is often long delayed without telltale
draining sinus. And because actinomycosis is a normal flora of oral cavity, the isolation
of actinomyces in sputum is not adequate for the diagnosis of pulmonary actinomycosis.
So almost all cases of pulmonary actinomycosis are diagnosed after surgical exploration
under the impression of lung cancer.
But the development of percutaneous needle lung aspiration made it possible to find
characteristic sulfur granules and diagnose pulmonary actinomycosis without surgery.
We presented a case of pulmonary actinomycosis which had been diagnosed by
percutaneous needle lung aspiration cytology.
